Habitat Improvement
Chalk streams such as the River Ver are a globally rare habitat, with the majority being situated in southern England. They are able, when in good condition, to sustain a high biodiversity.
We are working together with English Nature and the Environment Agency to make improvements to our stretch of the river. Some of the work we are doing includes narrowing the channel to improve water flow and to help the movement of sediment. The overall aim of the work is to improve the river’s water life and ultimately the conditions for spawning.
We run a restoration working party once a fortnight on a Saturday, ring John Dunckley, 07774197411 for more details.
Four to five hours works on a Saturday will qualify for free fishing.
Wildlife
As well as wild brown trout the river also contains miller’s thumb fish and rudd. The fly life is excellent with a range of sedge and upwings, snails, plenty of freshwater shrimp and hoglouse with even the odd leech. The area also has an abundance of dragonflies, a beautiful sight on a summer’s day.
There has been sightings of kingfishers, tufted duck, goosanders migrating bittern, green woodpeckers, woodcock, barn owls and even a few brief sightings of corncrake.
